I became fascinated with kintsugi to the point of obsession. It’s the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. But instead of hiding the crack, you fill it with gold. And that completely blew my mind. Because suddenly, the thing that should be a flaw becomes the most important part of the object. You don’t pretend nothing happened. You don’t restore the object to what it was before it broke. You show exactly where it was broken.

And you turn it into gold. I couldn’t stop thinking about it, because I saw something in kintsugi that I had been feeling myself for a long time. I just didn’t have a word for it before. That not everything that breaks us needs to be hidden afterwards. Sometimes it’s those cracks that make us who we are. The tracksuit was just the canvas. We embroider a golden line across its surface. It runs through the fabric like a crack, as if the garment had once fallen apart into pieces and someone had put it back together.

Except they didn’t try to erase the traces. Quite the opposite. They made them the most important part. The same motif appears elsewhere in my world, too. I have it on my Mustang, among other things. Not by accident. Kintsugi stopped being a reference for me. It became a signature. A reminder that something that has been through things doesn’t have to be worth less than something new. It might be worth more. That’s why KINTSUGI is a limited edition.

I didn’t want to put gold embroidery on a tracksuit just because it looked good. This design has to mean something. KINTSUGI. Karl Tomas. I was broken. I didn’t fix myself so that no one could see it. I turned it into gold.
